Marketing and Communications Lead
This position requires a highly organized, strategic, and creative professional who can balance planning, content development, and execution across multiple communication channels. The Marketing & Communications Lead plays a critical role in advancing the museum’s mission through audience engagement, brand visibility, and consistent, high-quality communication.
The Marketing & Communications Lead is responsible for developing and executing integrated marketing and communication strategies that increase attendance, expand audience reach, and strengthen relationships with members, donors, and the broader community. This role serves as a key driver of how the museum communicates its impact, programs, and value to the public.
This role is accountable for delivering measurable results through marketing performance, audience growth, and campaign effectiveness. Email marketing serves as a primary channel within this role, driving engagement, attendance, and conversion, supported by social media, website content, and broader communications efforts. The Lead tracks key performance metrics, ensures consistent messaging, and identifies opportunities to strengthen marketing effectiveness and audience connection.
Position Scope
The Marketing & Communications Lead manages and supports multiple operational areas, including:
Email marketing strategy, campaign execution, and audience segmentation
Social media strategy, content development, and engagement
Website content management and updates
Marketing campaigns for programs, events, exhibits, and fundraising initiatives
Brand messaging and communication consistency across all platforms
Performance tracking, including engagement, audience growth, and campaign impact
Content creation, including writing, photography coordination, and storytelling
Public relations and promotional communications
Cross-department coordination related to marketing and audience engagement initiatives
Because museum priorities shift throughout the year, this role must adapt marketing strategies based on seasonal programming, events, exhibits, and fundraising campaigns.
Essential Functions
Marketing Strategy & Campaign Execution
Develop and implement integrated marketing strategies aligned with museum priorities
Plan and execute campaigns supporting programs, events, exhibits, and fundraising initiatives
Ensure alignment of messaging, timing, and execution across all marketing channels
Identify opportunities to increase attendance, awareness, and audience engagement
Email Marketing & Audience Communications
Develop and manage email campaigns, including newsletters, eBlasts, and targeted communications
Implement audience segmentation to deliver relevant, high-performing messaging
Optimize campaign performance, including open rates, click-through rates, and conversions
Maintain and grow subscriber lists while ensuring data accuracy and consistency
Ensure timely, clear, and professional communication across all audience communications
Social Media & Digital Engagement
Lead and manage social media platforms, including content planning, creation, and scheduling
Create engaging, mission-driven content aligned with campaigns
Monitor engagement and respond to audience interaction in a timely and professional manner
Identify opportunities to expand reach through emerging platforms and trends
Content Creation & Brand Management
Develop compelling written content across email, social media, website, and promotional materials
Ensure consistent brand voice, tone, and messaging across all communications
Capture and curate photography and video content in collaboration with internal teams
Develop storytelling content that highlights programs, impact, and community engagement
Website Management
Maintain and update website content to ensure accuracy, relevance, and user experience
Align website content with marketing campaigns and communication priorities
Identify opportunities to improve site content, structure, and engagement
Performance & Collaboration
Track and report on key marketing metrics, including engagement, audience growth, email performance, and campaign impact
Collaborate across departments to align marketing with programs, events, and visitor experience
Identify opportunities to strengthen campaigns, improve communication effectiveness, and expand audience reach
Public Relations & Outreach
Assist with development of promotional and PR content, including press releases and announcements
Support promotion of major initiatives, exhibits, and partnerships
Decision-Making & Accountability
The Marketing & Communications Lead is expected to exercise sound judgment, manage priorities independently, and proactively address challenges. This role is accountable for delivering consistent, high-quality communication, meeting campaign deadlines, maintaining brand standards, and achieving measurable marketing and engagement outcomes.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum 3–5 years of marketing, communications, or digital marketing experience
Demonstrated experience managing email marketing campaigns and audience communications
Strong writing and content development skills
Experience with social media platforms and digital content strategy
Strong organizational and project management skills
Ability to manage multiple campaigns and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency with Google Workspace and willingness to learn additional platforms
Ability to work weekends and occasional evenings
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp or similar
Experience with CRM or audience segmentation tools
Experience with WordPress or similar website platforms
Photography and videography skills
Experience in nonprofit, museum, education, or community-based organizations
